William and Eliza Jarrell

Born April 10, 1848 in Washington Parish, Louisiana.
Son of William and Cassandra (McCain) Jarrell.

"Great-great-grandma Jarrell"
Eliza M. Jones
Born July 7, 1854 in Pike County, Mississippi.
Daughter of Wiley and Eliza (Breland) Jones.

1870 US Federal Census
Washington Parish, Louisiana
Jerald, William, age 22, male, white, farmer
Jerald, Liza, age 25, female, white, keeping house
Jerald, Ophelia, age 1, female, white

The ditto marks indicate the last name "Jerald" as William and Liza apparently lived next door to his parents, and were listed on the same page of the census records. They are listed as a separate household, so apparently they didn't actually live together.

Note: The far right columns indicate how many children a woman had and how many were still living. According to this, Eliza had given birth to 15 children, 12 of whom were living in 1900. Also, it shows that daughter Ophelia had 5 children. I wonder where they were and why she was living with her parents at this time?

1870 US Federal Census
Washington Parish, Louisiana
Jerald, William, age 46, male, white, Farmer
Jerald, Cassandera, age 46, female, white, Keeping house
Jerald, Ellen, age 15, female, white, farm laborer
Jerald, James, age 7, male, white
Jerald, Nancy, age 24, female, white, farm laborer
Jerald, William, age 4, male, white
Jerald, Cordelia, age 1, female, white

I think young William and Cordelia were probably Nancy's children. They are listed on the 1890 census still in William and Cassandra household as grandchildren. Wonder where their daddy was? And if their last name really was Jarrell or if the census taker just got it wrong?

1880 US Federal Census
Washington Parish, Louisiana
Fitchgarrold, William, age 58, Farmer
--, Casander, age 57, wife, Keeping [house]
--, James, age 17, son, at home
--, William, age 14, grandson, farm laborer
--, Cordelia, age 11, granddaughter

Wonder why James was "at home" and young William was a farm laborer? Maybe there was something wrong with James?
